Pirmą kartą panaudojo vokiečiai prie Ipro upės Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metu. Garstyčių arba česnako kvapo, bespalvis, riebus, sunkesnis už vandenį skystis, blogai tirpsta vandenyje ir gana gerai – organiniuose tirpikliuose. Lydymosi temperatūra 14,5 °C, virimo temperatūra 217 °C. Visapusiško poveikio nuodingoji medžiaga, turi slaptojo poveikio periodą, kumuliacinį poveikį, smarkiai veikia akis. Kovinė būsena – garai, aerozolis ir lašai. Sąlyginė mirtinoji dozė įkvėpus 1,5 mg·min/l (slaptasis periodas nuo 4 val. iki paros), pro odą – 70 mg/kg, pro virškinimo traktą – 1–2 mg/kg.
